Bruce Arnott
Sculpture
Bruce Arnott (1938-2018) was a highly respected South African sculptor, curator, and educator. A former Assistant Director of the South African National Gallery, he later embarked on a rigorous academic career which culminated as Director of the Michaelis School of Fine Art. Concurrently, Arnott exhibited nationally, producing many large public commissions situated in most of the major cities in South Africa. His work is represented in the collections of the Oppenheimer Foundation, the Rembrandt (Stuyvesant) Foundation and several prominent South African universities. Arnott's monumental 'Numinous Beast' stands outside the Iziko South African National Gallery (Cape Town).
In his work, Bruce Arnott plays with the forms of African vernacular sculpture to tell universal stories of dark humor and myth. Forced to work within the strictures of Apartheid South Africa, his work is noted for it's irony and subtle but astute social commentary.
Previously restricted from exhibiting more fully internationally, we are excited to introduce the work of Bruce Arnott to a wider audience.
